हिन्दू धर्म शास्त्रों के अनुसार देवो के देव महादेव अजन्मे है, अनंत है। पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, महादेव शिवशंकर जहाँ-जहाँ स्वयं प्रगट हुए उन बारह स्थानों पर स्थित शिवलिंगों को ज्योतिर्लिंगों के रूप में पूजा जाता है।
शास्त्रों एवं पुराणों के अनुसार शिवजी जहाँ-जहाँ स्वयं प्रगट हुए उन बारह स्थानों पर स्थित शिवलिंगों को ज्योतिर्लिंगों के रूप में पूजा जाता है। सम्पूर्ण तीर्थ ही लिंगमय है तथा सब कुछ लिंग में समाहित है। वैसे तो शिवलिंगों की गणना अत्यन्त कठिन है। जो भी दृश्य दिखाई पड़ता है अथवा हम जिस किसी भी दृश्य का स्मरण करते हैं, वह सब भगवान शिव का ही रूप है, उससे पृथक कोई वस्तु नहीं है। सम्पूर्ण चराचर जगत पर अनुग्रह करने के लिए ही भगवान शिव ने देवता, असुर, गन्धर्व, राक्षस तथा मनुष्यों सहित तीनों लोकों को लिंग के रूप में व्याप्त कर रखा है। सम्पूर्ण लोकों पर कृपा करने की दृष्टि से ही वे भगवान महेश्वर तीर्थ में तथा विभिन्न जगहों में भी अनेक प्रकार के लिंग धारण करते हैं। जहाँ-जहाँ जब भी उनके भक्तों ने श्रद्धा-भक्ति पूर्वक उनका स्मरण या चिन्तन किया, वहीं वे अवतरित हो गये अर्थात प्रकट होकर वहीं स्थित (विराजमान) हो गये। जगत का कल्याण करने हेतु भगवान शिव ने स्वयं अपने स्वरूप के अनुकूल लिंग की परिकल्पना की और उसी में वे प्रतिष्ठित हो गये। ऐसे लिंगों की पूजा करके शिवभक्त सब प्रकार की सिद्धियों को प्राप्त कर लेता है। भूमण्डल के लिंगों की गणना तो नहीं की जा सकती, किन्तु उनमें कुछ प्रमुख शिवलिंग हैं।
आइए जानते है भारत में स्थित 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों के बारे में-
1. सोमनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग (Somnath Jyotirlinga) –
सोमनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग भारत का ही नहीं अपितु इस पृथ्वी का पहला ज्योतिर्लिंग माना जाता है। यह मंदिर गुजरात राज्य के सौराष्ट्र क्षेत्र में स्थित है। शिवपुराण के अनुसार दक्षप्रजापति के श्राप से बचने के लिए, सोमदेव (चंद्रदेव) ने भगवान शिव की आराधना की। अंततः शिव प्रसन्न हुए और सोम(चंद्र) के श्राप का निवारण किया। सोम के कष्ट को दूर करने वाले प्रभु शिव की यहाँ पर स्थापना स्वयं सोमदेव ने की थी ! इसी कारण इस तीर्थ का नाम ”सोमनाथ” पड़ा। अभी तक विदेशी आक्रमणों के कारण यह मंदिर 17 बार नष्ट हो चुका है। और हर बार यह बिगड़ता और बनता रहा है।
2- मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग (Mallikārjuna Jyotirlinga)-
यह ज्योतिर्लिंग आन्ध्र प्रदेश में कृष्णा नदी के तट पर श्रीशैल नाम के पर्वत पर स्थित है। इस मंदिर का महत्व भगवान शिव के कैलाश पर्वत के समान कहा गया है। अनेक धार्मिक शास्त्र इसके धार्मिक और पौराणिक महत्व की व्याख्या करते हैं। कहते है एक बार कार्तिक किसी बात को लेकर अपने पिता भगवान् शिव से नाराज हो कर दक्षिण की दिशा में श्रीशैल पर्वत पर एकांतवास में चले गये थे लेकिन अपने माता-पिता की सेवा और भक्ति का मोह कार्तिके त्याग नहीं पाए और उन्होंने शिवलिंग बनाकर उनकी उपासना शुरू कर दी ! तभी से भगवान् शिव माँ पार्वती के साथ वहां पर विराजमान है ! शिव (अर्जुन) और पार्वती (मल्लिका )एक साथ विराजमान हुए इसीलिए इस ज्योतिर्लिंग का नाम मल्लिकार्जुन पड़ा। अनेक धार्मिक शास्त्र इसके धार्मिक और पौराणिक महत्व की व्याख्या करते हैं। पौराणिक मान्यतानुसार इस ज्योतिर्लिंग के दर्शन करने मात्र से ही व्यक्ति को उसके सभी पापों से मुक्ति मिलती है।
3- महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग (Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga)-
यह ज्योतिर्लिंग मध्य प्रदेश की धार्मिक राजधानी कही जाने वाली उज्जैन नगरी में स्थित है। जिसे प्राचीन साहित्य में अवन्तिका पुरी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। पौराणिक कथानुसार उज्जैन नगर में राक्षसों के आतंक से सभी नगरवासी बहुत परेशान थे ! एक दिन क्षिप्रा नदी के तट पर नगर के सभी नर-नारी एकत्रित हुए और एक तेजस्वी ब्राह्मण ने भगवान् शिव की आराधना और प्रजा को भयमुक्त करने की प्रार्थना की। भगवान् शिव धरती फाड़कर प्रगट हुए और राक्षस का वध कर अपने भक्तों की रक्षा की भक्तों की प्रार्थना पर भगवान् महाकालेश्वर शिवलिंग के रूप में वही बस गये! महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग की विशेषता है कि ये एकमात्र दक्षिणमुखी ज्योतिर्लिंग है। यहां प्रतिदिन सुबह की जाने वाली भस्मारती विश्व भर में प्रसिद्ध है। महाकालेश्वर की पूजा विशेष रूप से आयु वृद्धि और आयु पर आए हुए संकट को टालने के लिए की जाती है। उज्जैन वासी मानते हैं कि भगवान महाकालेश्वर ही उनके राजा हैं और वे ही उज्जैन की रक्षा कर रहे हैं।
4- ओंकारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग (Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga)-
ओंकारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग मध्य प्रदेश के प्रसिद्ध शहर इंदौर के समीप स्थित है। जिस स्थान पर यह ज्योतिर्लिंग स्थित है, उस स्थान पर नर्मदा नदी बहती है और पहाड़ी के चारों ओर नदी बहने से यहां ऊं का आकार बनता है। ऊं शब्द की उत्पति ब्रह्मा के मुख से हुई है। इसलिए किसी भी धार्मिक शास्त्र या वेदों का पाठ ऊं के साथ ही किया जाता है। यह ज्योतिर्लिंग औंकार अर्थात ऊं का आकार लिए हुए है, इस कारण इसे ओंकारेश्वर नाम से जाना जाता है। एक मान्यता ये भी है भगवान के महान भक्त अम्बरीष और मुचुकुन्द के पिता सूर्यवंशी क्षत्रिय राजा मान्धाता ने इस स्थान पर कठोर तपस्या करके भगवान शंकर को प्रसन्न किया था। वे एक महान तपस्वी और विशाल महायज्ञों के कर्त्ता थे। उस महान पुरुष मान्धाता के नाम पर ही इस पर्वत का नाम मान्धाता पर्वत हो गया। यहाँ के ज़्यादातर मन्दिरों का निर्माण पेशवा राजाओं द्वारा ही कराया गया था। ऐसा बताया जाता है कि भगवान ओंकारेश्वर का मन्दिर भी उन्ही पेशवाओं द्वारा ही बनवाया गया है। इस मन्दिर में दो कमरों (कक्षों) के बीच से होकर जाना पडता है। चूँकि भीतर अन्धेरा रहता है, इसलिए वहाँ हमेशा दीपक जलाया जाता है।
5- केदारनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग (Kedarnath Jyotirlinga)-
केदारनाथ स्थित ज्योतिर्लिंग भी भगवान शिव के 12 प्रमुख ज्योतिर्लिंगों में आता है। यह उत्तराखंड में स्थित है। बाबा केदारनाथ का मंदिर बद्रीनाथ के मार्ग में स्थित है। केदारनाथ समुद्र तल से 3584 मीटर की ऊँचाई पर स्थित है। केदारनाथ का वर्णन स्कन्द पुराण एवं शिव पुराण में भी मिलता है। कहते है नर-नारायण ने पत्थर का शिवलिंग बनाकर भगवन शिव की कठिन तपस्या की ! भगवान् शिव ने प्रगट होकर नर नारायण से वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा– नर नारायण ने कहा- प्रभु आप इस धरती को पावन कर दीजिये ! तभी से बर्फ़ से ढके चारों ओर से ऊँचे पर्वतों से घिरे स्थान भगवान् शिव लिंग रूप में रहते है।
6- भीमाशंकर ज्योतिर्लिंग (Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga)-
भीमाशंकर ज्योतिर्लिंग महाराष्ट्र के पूणे जिले में सह्याद्रि नामक पर्वत पर स्थित है। भीमाशंकर ज्योतिर्लिंग को मोटेश्वर महादेव के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इस मंदिर के विषय में मान्यता है कि कुम्भकर्ण का बेटा भीम भगवान् ब्रह्मा के वरदान से अत्याधिक बलवान हो गया था ! बल के मद में अंधा होकर उसने जनता पर शिवभक्तों पर अत्याचार करना शुरू कर दिया था ! इंद्र देव को भी उसने युद्ध में हरा दिया था ! शिवभक्त राजा सुदाक्षण को उसने कारागार में डाल दिया था ! सुदाक्षण ने कारागार में शिवलिंग बनाकर उसकी पूजा-अर्चना शुरू कर दी ! इसकी जानकारी मिलते ही एक दिन भीम वहां आ गया और उसने शिवलिंग को अपने पैरों से रौंध डाला क्रोधित होकर भगवान् शिव वहां प्रगट हुए और राक्षसराज भीम का वध कर दिया। तभी से इस ज्तोतिर्लिंग का नाम भीमाशंकर पड़ गया। इस ज्योतिर्लिंग के विषय में ऐसी मान्यता भी है, कि जो भक्त श्रृद्धा से इस मंदिर के प्रतिदिन सुबह सूर्य निकलने के बाद दर्शन करता है, उसके सात जन्मों के पाप दूर हो जाते हैं तथा उसके लिए स्वर्ग के मार्ग खुल जाते हैं।
7- काशी विश्वनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग (Kashi Vishawanath Jyotirlinga)-
यह उत्तर प्रदेश के काशी नामक स्थान पर स्थित है। काशी सभी धर्म स्थलों में सबसे अधिक महत्व रखती है। इसलिए सभी धर्म स्थलों में काशी का अत्यधिक महत्व कहा गया है। इस स्थान की मान्यता है, कि प्रलय आने पर भी यह स्थान बना रहेगा। इसकी रक्षा के लिए भगवान शिव इस स्थान को अपने त्रिशूल पर धारण कर लेंगे और प्रलय के टल जाने पर काशी को उसके स्थान पर पुन: रख देंगे।
8- त्र्यंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग (Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga)-
यह ज्योतिर्लिंग गोदावरी नदी के करीब महाराष्ट्र राज्य के नासिक जिले में स्थित है। इस ज्योतिर्लिंग के सबसे अधिक निकट ब्रह्मागिरि नाम का पर्वत है। इसी पर्वत से गोदावरी नदी शुरू होती है। भगवान शिव का एक नाम त्र्यंबकेश्वर भी है। कहा जाता है कि भगवान शिव को गौतम ऋषि तथा गोदावरी की प्रार्थनानुसार भगवान शिव इस स्थान में वास करने की कृपा की और त्र्यम्बकेश्वर नाम से विख्यात हुए। त्र्यम्बकेश्वर की विशेषता है कि यहाँ पर तीनों ( ब्रह्मा-विष्णु और शिव ) देव निवास करते है जबकि अन्य ज्योतिर्लिंगों में सिर्फ महादेव। पौराणिक कथा अनुसार इस ज्योतिर्लिंग के बारे में कहा जाता है कि भगवान शिव को गौतम ऋषि और गोदावरी नदी के आग्रह पर यहां ज्योतिर्लिंग रूप में रहना पड़ा।
9- वैद्यनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग (Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga)-
श्री वैद्यनाथ शिवलिंग का समस्त ज्योतिर्लिंगों की गणना में नौवां स्थान बताया गया है। भगवान श्री वैद्यनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग का मन्दिर जिस स्थान पर अवस्थित है, उसे वैद्यनाथ धाम कहा जाता है। यह स्थान झारखण्ड प्रान्त, पूर्व में बिहार प्रान्त के संथाल परगना के दुमका नामक जनपद में पड़ता है।

पौराणिक कथानुसार एक बार राक्षस राज रावण ने अति कठोर तपस्या करके भगवान् शिव को प्रसन्न कर लिया ! जब भगवान् शिव ने रावण से वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा- तब रावण ने भगवान् शिव से लंका चलकर वही निवास करने का वरदान माँगा ! भगवान् शिव ने वरदान देते हुए रावण के सामने एक शर्त रख दी कि शिवलिंग के रूप में मैं तुम्हारे साथ लंका चलूँगा लेकिन अगर तुमने शिवलिंग को धरातल पे रख दिया तो तुम मुझको पुनः उठा नहीं पाओगे ! रावण शिवलिंग को उठाकर लंका की ओर चल पड़ा ! रास्ते में रावण को लघुशंका लग गयी ! रावण ब्राह्मण वेश में आये भगवान् विष्णु की लीला को समझ नहीं पाया और उसने ब्राह्मण (विष्णु जी) के हाथ में शिवलिंग देकर लघुशंका से निवृत्त होने चला गया ! भगवान् विष्णु ने शिवलिंग को पृथ्वी पर रख दिया ! जब रावण वापस लौटा और उसने शिवलिंग को जमीन पर रखा पाया तो रावण ने बहुत प्रयास किया लेकिन वो शिवलिंग को नहीं उठा पाया ! वैद्य नामक भील ने शिवलिंग की पूजा अर्चना की इसीलिए इस तीर्थ का नाम वैद्यनाथ पड़ा।
10- नागेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग (Nageshvara Jyotirlinga)-
यह ज्योतिर्लिंग गुजरात के बाहरी क्षेत्र में द्वारिका स्थान में स्थित है। धर्म शास्त्रों में भगवान शिव नागों के देवता है और नागेश्वर का पूर्ण अर्थ नागों का ईश्वर है। भगवान शिव का एक अन्य नाम नागेश्वर भी है। द्वारका पुरी से भी नागेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग की दूरी 17 मील की है। इस ज्योतिर्लिंग की महिमा में कहा गया है कि जो व्यक्ति पूर्ण श्रद्धा और विश्वास के साथ यहां दर्शनों के लिए आता है उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूरी हो जाती हैं।
11- रामेश्वरम ज्योतिर्लिंग(Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga)-
यह ज्योतिर्लिंग तमिलनाडु राज्य के रामनाथ पुरं नामक स्थान में स्थित है। भगवान शिव के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक होने के साथ-साथ यह स्थान हिंदुओं के चार धामों में से एक भी है। इस ज्योतिर्लिंग के विषय में यह मान्यता है, कि इसकी स्थापना स्वयं भगवान श्रीराम ने की थी। भगवान् राम ने स्वयं अपने हाथों से पवित्र पावन शिवलिंग की स्थापना की थी! राम के ईश्वर अर्थात भगवान शिव को रामेश्वर भी कहा गया है।
12- घृष्णेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग (Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga)-
घृष्णेश्वर महादेव का प्रसिद्ध मंदिर महाराष्ट्र के औरंगाबाद शहर के समीप दौलताबाद के पास स्थित है। पौराणिक कथानुसार देवगिरि पर्वत के निकट सुकर्मा नामक ब्राह्मण अपनी पतिव्रता पत्नी सुदेश के साथ भगवान् शिव की पूजा किया करते थे किंतु सन्तान न होने से चिंतित रहते थे। पत्नी के आग्रह पर उसके पत्नी की बहन घुस्मा के साथ विवाह किया जो परम शिव भक्त थी। शिव कृपा से उसे एक पुत्र धन की प्राप्ति हुई। इससे सुदेश को ईष्या होने लगी और उसने अवसर पा कर सौत के बेटे की हत्या कर दी। भगवान शिवजी की कृपा से बालक जी उठा तथा घुस्मा की प्रार्थना पर वहां शिवजी ने वास करने का वरदान दिया और वहां पर वास करने लगे ! घुश्मेश्वर के नाम से प्रसिध्द हुएं उस तालाब का नाम भी तबसे शिवालय हो गया। बौद्ध भिक्षुओं द्वारा निर्मित एलोरा की प्रसिद्ध गुफाएं इस मंदिर के समीप स्थित हैं। यहीं पर श्री एकनाथजी गुरु व श्री जनार्दन महाराज की समाधि भी है।
