दुनिया के महान ग्रंथों में से एक महाभारत में वर्णित है कि एक बार राजा द्रुपद ने गुरु द्रोणाचार्य का अपमान कर दिया। गुरु द्रोणाचार्य इस अपमान को भूल नहीं पाए। इसलिए जब पण्डवों और कौरवों की शिक्षा समाप्त हुई तो उन्होंने गुरु दक्षिणा में राजा द्रुपद को बंदी बनाकर अपने सामने लाने को कहा।
पहले कौरव राजा द्रुपद को बंदी बनाने गए पर तो वो द्रुपद से हार गए। कौरवों के पराजित होने के बाद पांडव गए और उन्होंने द्रुपद को बंदी बनाकर द्रोणाचार्य के समक्ष प्रस्तुत किया।
द्रोणाचार्य ने अपने अपमान का बदला लेते हुए द्रुपद का आधा राज्य स्वयं के पास रख लिया और शेष राज्य द्रुपद को देकर उसे रिहा कर दिया।
गुरु द्रोण से पराजित होने के बाद महाराज द्रुपद अत्यन्त लज्जित हुए और उन्हें किसी प्रकार से नीचा दिखाने का उपाय सोचने लगे। इसी चिन्ता में एक बार वे घूमते हुए कल्याणी नगरी के ब्राह्मणों की बस्ती में जा पहुंचे।
वहां उनकी भेंट याज तथा उपयाज नामक महान कर्मकाण्डी ब्राह्मण भाइयों से हुई। राजा द्रुपद ने उनकी सेवा करके उन्हें प्रसन्न कर लिया एवं उनसे द्रोणाचार्य के मारने का उपाय पूछा। उनके पूछने पर बड़े भाई याज ने कहा, ‘इसके लिए आप एक विशाल यज्ञ का आयोजन करके अग्निदेव को प्रसन्न कीजिए जिससे कि वे आपको वे महान बलशाली पुत्र का वरदान दे देंगे।’
महाराज ने याज और उपयाज से उनके कहे अनुसार यज्ञ करवाया। उनके यज्ञ से प्रसन्न हो कर अग्निदेव ने उन्हें एक ऐसा पुत्र दिया जो सम्पूर्ण आयुध एवं कवच कुण्डल से युक्त था।
उसके पश्चात् उस यज्ञ कुण्ड से एक कन्या उत्पन्न हुई जिसके नेत्र खिले हुए कमल के समान थे, भौहें चन्द्रमा के समान वक्र थीं तथा उसका वर्ण श्यामल था।
उसके उत्पन्न होते ही एक आकाशवाणी हुई कि इस बालिका का जन्म क्षत्रियों के संहार और कौरवों के विनाश के हेतु हुआ है। बालक का नाम धृष्टद्युम्न एवं बालिका का नाम कृष्णा रखा गया जो की राजा द्रुपद की बेटी होने के कारण द्रौपदी कहलाई।
शिवजी ने दिया वरदान
द्रौपदी पूर्व जन्म में एक बड़े ऋषि की गुणवान कन्या थी। वह रूपवती, गुणवती और सदाचारिणी थी, लेकिन पूर्वजन्मों के कर्मों के कारण किसी ने उसे पत्नी रूप में स्वीकार नहीं किया। इससे दुखी होकर वह तपस्या करने लगी।
उसकी तपस्या के कारण भगवान शिव प्रसन्न हए और उन्होंने द्रौपदी से कहा तुम मनचाहा वरदान मांग ले। इस पर द्रौपदी इतनी प्रसन्न हो गई कि उसने बार-बार कहा मैं सर्वगुणयुक्त पति चाहती हूं। भगवान शंकर ने कहा तुमने पति पाने के लिए मुझसे पांच बार प्रार्थना की है।
इसलिए तुमको दुसरे जन्म में एक नहीं पांच पति मिलेंगे। तब द्रौपदी ने कहा मैं तो आपकी कृपा से एक ही पति चाहती हूं। इस पर शिवजी ने कहा मेरा वरदान व्यर्थ नहीं जा सकता है।
